Research

Most of my research is in paleomagnetism and geomagnetism. I am particularly interested in recent and long term secular variation and reversals of the geomagnetic field, the solution of geophysical inverse problems and using statistical methods on geophysical problems. I use paleomagnetic data to map variations in the geomagnetic field on millennial and million year time scales, and study the geomagnetic field on a global scale. Since I generally use other people's data for this, I also collaborate with other researchers on methods for archiving rock and paleomagnetic data so that they will be publicly accessible. This work has led to the MagIC database project.

Another interest is in the present-day geomagnetic field measured using magnetometers carried on low-earth-orbiting satellites. Magnetic fields induced in Earth's mantle by time-variations in the external part of the field are used to study electrical conductivity of Earth's mantle.
